The four considerations for solar PV installation

The Government is aiming to triple the amount of solar power by 2030, and this will turbo charge demand for roof top installations across the UK. To help professional builders deliver a successful and compliant solar solution when on site.

Builders must be mindful of four key areas when embarking on the practical on-site steps involved in a solar PV installation project. Doing so will ensure the delivery of a high performing, compliant, and protected renewable technology solution that provides access to sustainable and cheaper energy for households.

1. Follow the rules and regulations

Generating sustainable and inexpensive power via a solar panel solution on the roof is one of the prime attractions driving solar take up among consumers and creating additional business building opportunity for the trade. 

In addition, another key factor is the ability for households to sell ‘excess’ electricity back to the national grid thanks to the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme, which pays for excess electricity generated by renewable sources such as solar panels. 

However, underpinning this is the requirement to follow all the necessary regulations for a grid-connected system. This necessitates gaining the permissions and notifications to the National Grid for a solar PV system if the solution is over 3.68kW. 

In addition, whilst there is currently no legal obligation that a solar PV connection is undertaken by a MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) approved installer, this is a requirement if the homeowner wishes to take advantage of schemes such as SEG.

2. Team Up  

Builders looking to add solar PV installation to their service offering can collaborate with an MCS-certified installer. Such accredited installers can undertake the required electrical connections and ensure compliance with the prevailing National Grid regulations. Additionally, MCS installers can also provide expert insight on the best inverter and battery storage solution to match the energy usage patterns of the customer.  

From a location perspective, batteries should be positioned outside if possible but ensure that all safety guidelines are followed to prevent potential fire hazards.  

3. Testing and setting out

As the installation process commences, contractors should always test each array panel individually prior to roof mounting to ensure they are working correctly. They also need to record the panel serial numbers for certification and warranty purposes. 

Setting out the panels is also a key component of a successful installation project. Ensure proper alignment of the initial panel as this critical action will lead to all subsequent panels being positioned correctly. Failing to adopt this important first step can result in both aesthetic and panel functional issues that may have to be remedied later. 

4. System protection 

With solar PV specified for both new home developments as well as an increasing number of retrofit projects on older properties, it is important to understand some differences when it comes to warranties. Retrofitting a solar PV system may offer limited warranty protection because of the presence of older roofing materials.
