British Gypsum has opened the doors to a newly refurbished training academy at its Head Office in East Leake, Leicestershire.
Designed to provide an enhanced practical training environment for those already in the industry – as well as the next generation of installers – the new training academy is just part of a wider investment to help upskill and increase the competency of those already in the industry – and ensure that it does its bit to help the industry close the skills gap.
In response to the changing needs of those working on site – and to help reduce the amount of time installers spend away from site – British Gypsum has increased its current course offering from 12 to 34 courses. It has also developed new training pathways, launched an interactive and immersive training prospectus, and e-learning platform. These new training courses, platforms and pathways allow the manufacturer to continue delivering training 24/7, reducing time spent away from site, maintaining productivity levels, whilst upskilling workforces to the highest levels.
Commenting on the launch of its newly refurbished training academy and its investment into its training offering as a whole, James Maclean, Head of Training Academies said: “As the UK’s leading manufacturer of high-performance drylining solutions, our customers rely upon us to provide them with the correct technical and installation advice, so we are pleased to be able to provide them with state of the art training facilities, increase the number of courses we offer and develop more resources that are accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to ensure that we do all we can to help the industry close the skills gap.”
Throughout 2022, British Gypsum will continue to invest in its training facilities across its network of UK academies.

FAST WORK
British Gypsum launches new product that sets 50 per cent faster than standard skim finish plaster
Time is a precious commodity for the professional trades and any product that can help complete projects quicker will be welcome. British Gypsum’s new high-performance skim finish – ThistlePro® FastSet Finish – promises to do just that with a setting time that’s half that of standard skim finish plaster. It also removes the need for additives and hacks that reduce product performance and void warranties.
Commenting on the launch, Paul Cassidy, Product Portfolio Development Director at the company, said: “Following feedback from a survey we carried out last year, it became clear that more of our customers would prefer to work with a finishing plaster that has a faster setting time, with many of them already using something similar several times a week. As a result of this, we are pleased to be launching the first skim finishing product on the market with a setting time of 60 minutes. The latest product will not only provide our customers with an option that has been designed to allow installers to work more efficiently, but peace of mind that the product guarantee will remain valid.
