Rainwater Systems’ new galvanised steel guttering coating

Rainwater Systems’ new galvanised steel guttering coating

A innovative new coating is extending the life of galvanised steel guttering, even in some of the most challenging settings

Metal rainwater systems already have multiple advantages over other materials, not least their aesthetic appeal which – as hard as they might try – plastic alternatives can never quite replicate. With guttering playing a not insignificant part in the kerb appeal of any property that makes it an appealing prospect alone. Moreover, plastic prices have actually been rising faster than steel of late, whilst the latter has a much longer expected lifetime. Add to that galvanised steel’s sustainability credentials – where it can be fully recycled, including any waste a builder might generate on site – and its ease of use, and the argument becomes compelling.

From the point of view of the builder, if you’ve been accustomed to fitting plastic you can certainly switch to galvanised steel, with little more than a hacksaw and a drill required. Thanks to external unions, which makes the inside of the gutter completely smooth along its entire length, Rainclear Systems’ Infinity can actually be installed level, although a slight fall is recommended.

There are, of course, always ways to improve upon what is already a very good product and, when it comes to its galvanised steel solution, Rainclear Systems has done just that. Previously, a zinc coated galvanised steel would not be a suitable installation in harsher climatic conditions, particularly those classed as C5M Environments with high levels of salinity – such as coastal and marine areas. Similarly, commercial, industrial and agricultural locations can also present a challenge.

The secret to the latest advance is a hot dip galvanising process in which the molten bath has a unique chemical composition, including zinc, 3.5% aluminium, and 3% magnesium. The result is the new Magnelis® coating, which delivers a much higher level of corrosion resistance and increases its durability – up to three time greater than traditional galvanised steel, in fact.

As a result, the property owner can enjoy a true metallic finish to their guttering with the reassurance of a 20-year warranty (when installed up to C4 environments). It should be noted, however, that this guarantee only applies where the rainwater system is left with the bare metal appearance it is supplied in. The addition of any other coating or further painting will not carry the same warranty.

At the same time, Rainclear Systems galvanised steel will continue to be available in seven colours from stock and there is a much wider range of bespoke shades that can be specified with longer lead times.

One of the existing advantages of a galvanised steel guttering coated with zinc is that it self-heals when cut, with no need to touch up the ends, and the new compound maintains that asset. It is also significantly cheaper than aluminium. All of which means builders can offer their clients a rainwater system that is significantly more robust, at an attractive price point and with that all important visual appeal.
