Hauraton’s guide to sustainable drainage

In a residential development in Stourport-on-Severn, a housebuilder took an innovative step by opting for Hauraton’s DRAINFIX CLEAN drainage system.

This decision highlights the growing need for sustainable water management in residential construction, particularly near sensitive ecosystems like the nearby River Severn and River Stour.

The development required a drainage solution capable of protecting the local environment by managing surface water runoff and preventing pollution from reaching these important watercourses.

Why Drainfix Clean?

Standard linear drainage systems can handle stormwater but often fall short when it comes to filtering out harmful pollutants. Given the proximity of this development to local rivers, DRAINFIX CLEAN was specified for its ability to collect, filter, and drain rainwater.

The system incorporates CARBOTEC, an advanced filtration substrate, that effectively traps pollutants like petrol hydrocarbons, silt, and heavy metals, creating a filter cake on the surface.

The harmful pollutants are mainly attached to ultra fine particles (0.006 to 0.060 mm) which cannot be separated by normal settling tanks or sedimentation plants, therefore reliable cleaning can only be achieved by filtration.

DRAINFIX CLEAN offers an effective pollutant removal rate of up to 99.9%, ensuring the water entering nearby rivers is significantly cleaner. This contributes to safeguarding local wildlife and reducing the overall environmental impact.

The original design is based on the proven FASERFIX SUPER, one of Hauraton’s robust fibre-reinforced concrete channels. Offering sufficient retention, between 25 – 130 litres per metre during heavy rainfall, this system is ideal for managing surface water on hard landscaped developments, where pooling and flooding can be a concern.

The maintenance process involves simply removing and disposing of the filter cake, while the CARBOTEC substrate, the core filtration material, remains intact and does not need to be replaced.

This design reduces the frequency and cost of upkeep, with extremely long maintenance intervals. For example, the first inspection is required only after 10 years (depending on local conditions) to ensure the system continues to perform efficiently with minimal intervention.

With its high load-bearing ductile iron gratings, it can withstand heavy vehicles such as delivery lorries and offers long term durability. Water treatment and durability make DRAINFIX CLEAN the ideal choice for residential and domestic applications.

The Stourport-on-Severn project sets a new standard for drainage in developments near natural water sources, and Hauraton hopes this example will encourage future developers to take similar steps, ensuring better environmental protection in urban planning.

FAQ’s

Q: How does rainwater management impact residential developments?

A: Effective rainwater management prevents flooding, protects foundations, and reduces strain on local water systems while also contributing to sustainability goals.

Q: Can rainwater systems like DRAINFIX CLEAN be integrated into smaller residential projects?

A: Absolutely. Scalable systems are available that can suit any project size, ensuring proper water filtration and runoff management even in smaller developments.

Q: What are the key considerations when selecting a rainwater management system for residential projects?

A: Contractors should consider the capacity of the system, ease of installation, long-term maintenance requirements, and how well the solution aligns with environmental goals, such as improving water quality and reducing pollutants in runoff.

Q: Can rainwater management systems like DRAINFIX CLEAN help developers meet local regulations?

A: Yes, these systems help meet both national and local requirements for sustainable drainage solutions (SuDS), making compliance easier for contractors and developers while also enhancing a project’s environmental credentials. The system has received the technical approval for construction products by the DiBt.
