Tibby Singh is fixed on ForgeFix ForgeFast Elite Performance Woodscrews
As a carpenter and joiner, I’m constantly screwing into wood. So, over the years, I’ve tried more types of screws than I’ve had hot meals. One of the leading brands out there is ForgeFast, by ForgeFix, who produce and distribute a vast range of fixings and fasteners.
At first sight, I was intrigued to observe the amount of technology that has gone into something that seems as simple as a screw. People often think a screw is a screw, but there is, in fact, a difference between a good screw and a bad screw. A good screw stands out, when it comes to taking it out later down the line, as it should come out easily without the head rounding off.
The first thing I noticed with this tub of screws is that it comes with the required Pozi PZ2 bit and, with the bit fitting the head like a glove with a firm grip, they are machined to perfection. This tight fit allows the screw to be held to the bit by the grip alone. This is especially useful when having to work single handedly in confined spaces. This is just the start because, thanks to the double cutting point at the tip of the screw, you can feel the instant pull. It’s a feature that also reduces splitting. With no pilot holes required, this saves time when building studwork. It’s not just good for wood, either, because it’s capable of penetrating 0.8mm steel.
Working our way along the design, it has a notched cutting thread which provides a firmer fixing with reduced drive torque. Working our way up the shank, we have the anti-friction thread that prevents separation of the timbers when screwing, and also reduces splitting. Then finally, just underneath the head of the screw, there are fine reinforced notches allowing the screw to be sent home, without the need to countersink first. The screws have a corrosion resistant coating, which is claimed to last six times longer than a standard zinc screw.
There is a wide range of screw sizes available in the ForgeFast range for any job, from 3.0 x 12mm up to 6.0 x 240mm. There are options to choose from boxes or tubs, for when you know you’ll be going through a lot of screws of the same size. However, you can also pick them up in an Organiser Pro assortment pack for when you need a good range for a quick fix. This selection saves going back and forth to the van for the right size screw.
Ironically, developing ForgeFast must have been a slow process, with a lot of research and development to get to this final product. There’s a very diverse choice of solutions, with timber screws, construction screws and screws for more specific jobs, such as tongue & groove flooring, or MDF & chipboard flooring. To complement the range of screws, the manufacturer has got you covered with its screwdriver bit sets.
