Akzo Noble brands are extolling the virtues of the latest hybrid technology for trim products, which offer all the benefits of water-based products with a quality of finish previously only possible with solvent-based paints.
Decorators will no doubt remember when water-based trim products started appearing in merchant branches for the first time. The benefits were clear – with lower VOC levels, water-based paints were much more environmentally friendly and were formulated to have minimal odour. They also offered quicker drying times and greater efficiency on site. However, many felt that they compromised the top coat finish – with lower sheen levels and a higher likelihood of brush marks than the equivalent solvent-based products.
For many manufacturers that meant going back to the drawing board in an effort to still provide all these benefits while offering a product that gave a perfect finish too.
For Dulux Trade a new hybrid technology called alkyd emulsion – which contains both alkyd and water – has provided the answer. With this technology you can achieve faster, more productive work, whilst creating a finish that replicates the high sheen and flowout properties of traditional solvent-borne paints. This means neither you nor your customer will ever have to compromise on the finished result.
The open time of the Quick Dry trim range is double that of traditional acrylic water-borne products, meaning application is much easier thanks to a longer wet edge and considerably better flow out. Its quick drying properties mean you can do two coats in one day – and it’s touch-dry in two hours, which is great news for your customers. Furthermore, the level of discolouration in the top coat finish is lower than with solvent-based paints meaning paintwork stays whiter for longer.
When it comes to applying Quick Dry products, first check if there is any existing solvent-borne paint already in place, and then remove the sheen level to a matt finish. This paves the way for the adhesion of the Quick Dry Undercoat, which can be used as a primer undercoat for both water and solvent-borne finishes.
Once the undercoat has dried and the surface has been denibbed to remove any atmospheric dust, apply the Quick Dry Gloss, which is specifically designed to form a strong adhesion with the Quick Dry Undercoat as part of an overall system. For an even spread and beautifully slick finish use a synthetic brush – alternatively, all Quick Dry products can be sprayed on, to cut application time by up to 80%.
