Why Navien UK’s combi crossover boilers could be the answer for multi-generational homes

Sean Keleher, National Technical Manager for Navien UK, explains why its new category of ‘combi crossover’ boilers could be the perfect answer for multi-generational homes.

According to data from the 2021 Census, the number of adults living with their parents in England and Wales has risen by 14.7% in a decade. This increase in the number of adults per household, combined with factors such as the rise in the number of home workers, is placing increased demands on everyone’s heating and hot water needs.

In 2022, Navien UK launched its new NCB ON range, a series of new 20% hydrogen blend boilers set to transform the lives of homeowners with the heaviest heating and hot water demands. The largest boiler in the range, the NCB700 ON, and the first of its kind in the UK, has the capability of delivering hot water to three bathrooms simultaneously.

Simultaneous showering

With the NCB ON range, Navien’s boilers have a built-in domestic hot water recirculation pump (NCB700), state-of-the-art flow adjustment valve and auto mixing valve for superb hot water comfort for rapid hot water delivery.

The NCB700 ON also comes with our NaviCirc device as standard which can be installed from scratch or joined to the existing distribution pipework. The built-in pump within the boiler unit pushes water around the NaviCirc device and, once it reaches 35°C, the circulation will be blocked. The pump inside the boiler then recognises this and stops circulating the domestic hot water around the loop. Once the temperature drops below 35°C, the pump will kick back in as required.

The NCB700 ON offers flow rates of up to 22 litres per minute, which enables the system to deliver instant hot water to several outlets at the same time. For customers in multigenerational homes, this means that they can run up to three showers seamlessly at the same time.

Goodbye to the cylinder

Crucially for installers, our boilers can do this without the need for a hot water cylinder, making installations in larger homes less time-consuming and less expensive for homeowners.

The NCB ON range is unique in the sense that it brings together the power of a high-performance system boiler with the cylinder less-advantages of a compact combi model, which is why we didn’t feel it fitted in any of the existing boiler categories currently on offer in the UK market. We, therefore, felt it necessary to create a new category – the combi crossover – which allows installers to easily fit reliable boilers in homes with heavy demands for hot water but without the hassle of fitting a cylinder.

For customers that already have a system boiler fitted, the combi crossover range allows for the tank and cylinder to be removed entirely, creating new space for storage or even a small WC – an essential for the ever-growing space requirements of the modern home or those looking to add value to their property.

Boilers within our combi crossover range use 38% less gas than a standard combi boiler and can help homeowners to save over 7,500 litres of water every year. The boiler also features an outstanding turndown ratio of 15:1, is 20% hydrogen blend ready, 94% efficient and also achieves an industry-leading ErP A+ energy rating when used with a Navien Smart Plus controller.
