Supporting safe working practices

Daniel Redfern, marketing manager at Marley explains what the company is doing to support safe working practices

With the current economic, social and environmental pressures, organisations might be forgiven for letting their guard slip when it comes to the question of safety. However, in uncertain times, people look for partners they can trust and rely on to deliver on all fronts – including safety.

At Marley, safety runs through our entire business. From manufacturing, product design and installation procedures right through to year-round safety on site, the wellbeing of our team and our customers come first. We have found that having embedded and universally recognised quality and safety standards and policies in place, gives peace of mind not only to the Marley family but also to our all-important customers.

Quality products support safety

‘For instance, pre-graded to BS 5534, our JB Red battens, which are also the only UK factory-graded batten holding BBA certification, set the standard and demonstrate perfectly how quality products support safety.

‘Produced at our specialist manufacturing site in Gainsborough, JB Red battens are created from slow-grown timber ensuring strength and durability. Being cut from kiln-dried sideboards provides maximum strength and stability, making them less likely to distort. Stringently tested and graded using Marley’s state-of-the-art dedicated roof batten scanning line – Goldeneye – each timber is intricately scanned to the millimetre. The result? A high quality, crucially, safe product that can be trusted.’

Avoid costly mistakes

With battens being an essential roofing component as well as structurally important, choosing the best quality available ensures a better result and can help prevent issues with the finished roof further down the line, something that all contractors want to avoid – no-one wants to do a job twice.

Moreover, since battens are weight-bearing, they are often used as a step ladder when a contractor is working on a roof. Unfortunately, cheaper and inferior battens can easily break, leading to accidents on site. Compromising on quality here could well lead to dangerous and costly mistakes.’

Safety standards throughout

It’s not only JB Red battens that adhere to such rigorous safety standards. In fact, all Marley products are designed and tested to work together safely as a complete roofing system. Comprising many different components, including JB Red battens, Marley’s roof system allows the contractor to create bespoke specifications to match the individual needs of each project, including the innovative Marley SolarTile, perfect for the growing solar market.

All components are fully compatible and have been tested for complete integration and maximum performance and are backed up by an excellent technical service. This level of care throughout delivers not only on product performance but ensures high levels of safety for the contractor.

On site safety

When it comes to on site safety, the roofing contractors installing our products have not been forgotten. We provide support via extensive installation guidance to make sure contractors are using Marley products in the most effective and safest way.

In addition, we offer advice to roofers working outdoors throughout the year. For example, our annual ‘Safe in the Sun’ campaign highlights the potential dangers of working outdoors on site during the summer months. Whilst the sun undoubtedly brings many benefits, too much of it can cause serious problems for our skin, both now and in years to come.

When it comes to skin cancer, including deadly melanoma, prevention is better than cure, so for this year, ‘Safe in the Sun’ focusses on looking after your skin in the sun. From information on changes in your skin to be aware of and what to do about them to advice on sun protection, you will find everything you need to know at www.marley.co.uk/safeinthesun

For Marley, safety runs through every aspect of our organisation. Its importance is such that, for the sake of our team, our customers and our business, we don’t compromise on it – ever.’
