Sunny Lotay, national commercial manager at PermaRoof UK introduces the the self-adhesive solution extending the life of metal gutters
The history of zinc and copper dates back centuries, but their use in construction particularly for roofing, cladding, and drainage was popularised in the early 19th century after it became possible to roll these materials.
Zinc is typically the more cost-effective choice against copper for roofing and drainage and has been used extensively across Europe for generations. While there have been many modern techniques to replace these traditional materials and methods, there continues to be an increase in zinc use across the UK due to its technical and aesthetic qualities. It has a striking visual appearance, can be extremely versatile and when installed correctly and maintained, has a long lifespan.
It is therefore understandable why homeowners might be reluctant to part ways with an original feature, especially one so expensive to replace. But when dealing with an ageing metal gutter, potentially one that has reached its life expectancy, there can be challenges that require quick but sufficient solutions to ensure it doesn’t fail.
Identifying weak spots
Due to the way metal gutters are installed in sections, over time there are naturally going to be issues in the weakest points – especially in larger areas where several rolls of metal sheeting have been used. Where water is able to settle in the seams and joins, this can lead to rust forming or a buildup of debris, which can cause problems with the efficacy of the gutter. Furthermore, during colder months when water freezes and thaws, the expansion in these weak spots can deepen cracks and lead to leaking.
When faced with leaking, cracked or rusty metal gutters or valleys, there is the worry that there will be a costly and lengthy job to undertake. Repairing or replacing an original gutter requires expert craftsmanship and time, and often the advice is to remove completely and upgrade.
Upgrade options
But there are options on the market to help extend the life of these gutters, giving homeowners the option of keeping original features and still having a waterproof and robust system. There are quick fixes such as using sealant or soldering to fill in gaps and also pre-fabricated gutter sections that can be fitted, but the likelihood is these methods will only be temporary and are going to need upgrading again at some point.
There have also been various techniques used to coat the gutter and provide it with a new surface – this includes a waterproof liquid membrane that can be applied in layers and can be successful in prolonging the lifespan of a gutter. This requires a level of skill to ensure an even spread as well as time to apply the layers and wait for them to dry. For this reason, it is also not easy to apply during poor weather conditions and could therefore be a slower process.
A new approach
For the easiest and quickest method, a self-adhered membrane is a no-brainer. With a solution that is flexible and easily adapted to suit various different corners, shapes and edges, it is easier to create a smooth finish. Having the self-adhering aspect means there is also no need to layer the membrane or wait for drying. Instead, it’s a simple installation process of placing the membrane down and peeling away the release liner in sections along the gutter.
No special tools or heat sources are needed and it is not only effective with metal gutters but also appropriate for use with wood and concrete with a primer. For contractors, it’s also a much more efficient way to get the job done quickly and in all weathers.
Because this is applied directly to the inside of metal guttering, it is not visible from the outside and so effectively extends the life of the original guttering. As well as reducing the cost, this is also a much more sustainable way to refurbish old metal gutters.
At PermaRoof, we introduced Elevate’s RubberGutter to our product range in 2022 in 1.3mm grade, 75cm x 20m rolls, or by the metre to suit exact specifications. We also provide a range of accessories and sealants to help with the drain, corners or seam details. With high UV and ozone resistance, RubberGutter does not deteriorate or become damaged in the same way other materials do so it is an ideal choice for those looking to give their old metal guttering a new lease of life.
