In the next instalment of our series, we asked Chris Fletcher, Technical Services Chemist for Thompson’s at Sherwin Williams to explain more about the company’s One Coat Patio and Block Paving Seal.
Our One Coat Patio and Block Paving Seal works to protect and seal high traffic, exposed areas such as patios and driveways. It protects block paving, flag stones, sandstone, limestone and granite from water ingress and subsequent damage – as if water is left to seep in, the substrate will soften and over time the surface can become uneven.
How to apply it
The first step is to make sure that the surface is clean by removing any dirt and contaminants.
Using a stiff wire brush, remove any loose debris like dust, moss and cement – or for larger surfaces, a jet washer can be used. Next, Advanced Patio and Block Paving Cleaner should be applied to remove dirt and grime and kill mould and algae – as well as protect against regrowth. Leave for 15 minutes before washing the product off and leaving the surface to dry.
Once the surface is completely dry, the One Coat Patio and Block Paving Seal can be applied. For the best results, we recommend using a brush as this will give you a better chance of achieving full coverage – and creating a thicker, tougher layer of protection that can withstand everyday use. However, for a faster process the product can also be applied with a long pile roller.
One Coat Patio and Block Paving Seal will be touch dry within just one hour and it can be walked on after four hours, so you can get the job done in one day. It is important to avoid heavy foot traffic or parking vehicles on the surface for a further 24 hours, to ensure it is fully cured through.
Due to its solvent-based formulation, the product should be removed from tools and equipment immediately after use with brush cleaner. Always speak to your local authority to find out how waste can be disposed of safely.
What are the benefits?
One of the main benefits of this solution is the speed of application. As only one coat is needed to offer tough protection against water ingress, time on site is kept to a minimum – meaning you do not need to make a return visit and can fit in more jobs across the week. What’s more, disruption to the customer is reduced as the product is touch dry within one hour and can be walked on after four hours.
With a robust solvent-based formulation that has high resistance to moss and algae growth, a quality result is delivered every time. It is also stain resistant against dirt, grease and oil for a long-lasting finish.
The solvent-based formulation also gives slip resistance. However, for customers in need of additional protection a Patio and Block Paving Anti-Slip Additive can be added. Simply pour it into the One Coat Patio and Block Paving Seal and mix so that the beads can disperse. It can then be applied in the usual way.
