With around 100 million tonnes of rubbish coming from the construction sector annually, one waste removal expert is urging builders to clean up their act and go green.
Harsha Rathnakaye from London-Junk.co.uk has been collecting commercial rubbish in the capital for over nine years.
He aims to recycle over 80% of the rubbish he collects and says builders should be trying do the same.
The amount of waste materials generated by the sector is slowly falling but Mr. Rathnakaye says by sorting the wood, metal and rubble and selling on unused materials, builders could make a real difference.
London-Junk.co.uk is a licensed building waste clearance service provider in the city and over recent years has seen the number of customers in the construction industry grow.
As well as sorting and recycling the rubbish, Mr. Rathnayake also offers his customers a cost effective solution.
Prices come in around 250% lower than paying for a skip and without the hassle of applying for a skip permit. The team load the rubbish and clean up once the job is complete.

Mr. Rathnayake said: “Businesses are becoming more conscious of the waste materials they produce and in an industry where you can recycle the bulk of it, like the construction sector, then you should.
“At London-Junk, recycling and reusing is a big part of what we do. If something can be reused, then we will pass it on to an organisation or charity that can make use of it.
“If it can’t be reused, then we assess whether it can be recycled. We work closely with contractors in the capital who sort the waste for us and makes sure it gets to the relevant recycling centres.”
