The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) has announced plans to change how it pays grants to construction companies.
The new system, to be rolled out in April 2018, will introduce automated grant payments.
The National Federation of Builders (NFB) believes that the automated system will simplify matters for SME builders by eliminating a process that is seen as too complex.
SMEs are crucial in tackling the skills shortage. Small and medium sized builders have a better understanding of their local communities, as they normally operate within 15 miles of their head offices. For every £1 invested, 90p stays locally to help train local apprentices, employ local workers, and boost local economies.
Richard Beresford, chief executive of the NFB, said: “By reducing complexity in claiming grants, this will encourage SMEs to claim and secure more funding so they can train the next generation in the skills the industry will need.”
