RIW has added Kryton’s Krystol Internal Membrane (KIM) waterproofing product to its range.
The hydrophilic crystalline admixture is certified by the British Board of Agrément (BBA) and provides a simple, reliable and permanent waterproofing solution. KIM complements RIW’s extensive portfolio of liquid and sheet applied systems.
KIM’s Krystol technology chemically reacts with water and un-hydrated cement particles in concrete to form insoluble, needle-shaped crystals that fill capillary pores and micro-cracks. By blocking channels in the concrete, it prevents water and waterborne contaminants from penetrating the surface. Additionally, any moisture introduced over the lifespan of the concrete will initiate further crystallization, ensuring a continuous waterproof seal. Tests carried out by Kryton and the University of British Columbia confirmed KIM’s effectiveness against hydrostatic pressure, and the product has also been independently tested and certified by the BBA.
The addition of the KIM waterproofing product to ready-mix concrete improves durability and extends the lifespan of concrete, reducing the cost of maintenance and repairs. It provides a significantly greater level of self-sealing of hairline cracks. Independent tests have shown that even cracks up to 0.5 mm were automatically sealed. It also reduces concrete shrinkage and cracking and reliably prevents corrosion of steel reinforcements, even in harsh environments.
KIM powder admixture is simple to use and can be added directly to the ready-mix truck on site or at the concrete batch plant. This versatile admixture is suitable for a wide range of applications including basements, lift pits and below ground structures, aquariums, zoos and waterparks, as well as infrastructure projects such as dams, tunnels and roads. It is certified for potable water and can, therefore, be safely used for water containment tanks and reservoirs.
“The addition of KIM to our product range is the latest step in the evolution of our portfolio,” said Alex Massingham, national sales manager of RIW. “This simple to use admixture not only offers reliable and long-lasting waterproofing, but also benefits the project by improving the concrete’s durability and resistance. With more than 90 years of experience in the industry, whatever the waterproofing and drainage needs of a project, we are able to deliver the best possible solution.”
