The UK’s general builders and specialist tradespeople are risking their health by missing vital appointments due to work commitments, according to a new research report from leading builders’ merchant, Jewson.
A quarter of people who took part in the research said they’ve actively skipped appointments or worry about booking a GP appointment, because they find it hard to take time off work. Despite 87% saying they’re able to do their job better if they feel fitter, 40% said they struggle to find time to exercise, with 26% saying they don’t do any physical activity outside of working hours, and 29% saying their job makes it hard to eat a healthy diet.
While 87% said they know it’s important to take care of your mental health, 40% said they find it hard to relax and unwind. The Jewson Trade Trends Report 2024 gives a clear picture of what hundreds of professional tradespeople across the UK are worried about, from health and wellbeing to the economic landscape, tool theft, the industry’s skills shortage and sustainability demands arising from incoming legislation on builds.
The latest annual report, which summarises the views of more than 500 general builders and specialist tradespeople across the UK is available to the industry on the Jewson website. Helene Bradley, Communications Director for STARK Building Materials UK, said: “At Jewson, we’re proud to partner the trades, which is why it’s important we understand and address how we can best help the industry’s hardworking general builders and specialist tradespeople.
