It’s National Apprenticeship Week and since Unitas Stoke-on-Trent began in February 2018, they have taken on 22 apprentices. Some of apprentices are working towards further qualifications in more specialised subjects such as Safety Health & Environment.
Unitas is committed to its social, environmental and economic responsibilities and recognises the important role that apprenticeships can play in supporting the future workforce of the business. All apprentices taken on by Unitas are required to achieve full qualifications during their training period, including NVQ and other relevant certificates and skills.
In 2021, Unitas went the ‘extra mile’ to include an apprenticeship placement each year for a care leaver as part of Unitas’s legacy to give them an opportunity to improve their life chances
Last month, Unitas, appointed Brooke Chomyn as Business Administration Apprentice and who is studying Business Administration Level 3. Brooke has settled in really well and is currently spending four months with each of the following Unitas teams; Governance, Policy and Performance Team, Planned Mechanical and Electrical, Asset Management and Investment and Stores to enable her to gather a full understanding of the business.
Brooke mentions “So far at Unitas I have felt really comfortable and welcomed by all of my colleagues. I am enjoying that I can learn about the business whilst completing my Level 3 Business Admin diploma.
I am experiencing in and out of office work for example I went out onto site to see the new apartment remodels at Bucknall New Road and to see the new Fire doors that had been installed at the Bell and Barker flats in Blurton. I have also been in the office gaining knowledge on the IT software and learning more about the company and the works that are done.”
Rachel Forster, Acting Governance & Business Improvement Manager adds, “Brooke has settled in really well, she has a thirst for knowledge and is very enthusiastic to learn the business. Brooke will be supported by Andrea, our CSR Co-ordinator, during her Apprenticeship and Andrea will encourage and mentor her throughout the next 18 months.”
Director of Unitas, Wayne Booth also praised Brooke, saying “It’s great to see Brooke settling in so well and making such a positive impression on her colleagues at Unitas. The repairs and maintenance sector, like many other sectors, is currently faced with a number of resource pressures, as the economy recovers from the Brexit/Covid impact. It is therefore vitally important that businesses like Unitas continue to invest in young talent like Brooke and pass on the skills from our experienced workforce to the next generation. Brooke has a fantastic opportunity now and we are very much looking forward to seeing how she develops and progresses in our business.”
