In response to the UK government’s ambitious ‘Get Britain Building’ initiative, a new trade association has been established to represent the entirety of the UK’s masonry sector.
The Masonry Association of Great Britain (MAGB) is dedicated to uniting contractors, manufacturers, suppliers and innovators across the entire masonry supply chain. Unlike any previous association, MAGB is focused on bringing together businesses of all sizes, ensuring that every voice in the industry is heard, no matter the scale of operations.
Co-founded by Christian Watson and Malc Hancock, the visionary founders of Phoenix Group, and Eve Livett, an industry expert with vast experience in operating trade bodies, MAGB aims to fill a gap in the sector’s representation. The trio’s combined experience and passion for the industry led them to collaborate in creating an association that’s inclusive and accessible to all, from small contractors to large-scale enterprises.
“The formation of MAGB is a momentous step forward for the masonry sector,” says Christian Watson. “We understand that the challenges facing the industry – from skill shortages to increasing demand – affect companies of all sizes. We’re proud to lead the creation of an association that will bring everyone together, regardless of their size, to ensure a stronger and more unified voice for the industry.”
MAGB is committed to improving the future of the UK’s masonry sector by focusing on key areas such as workforce education, apprenticeships and the upskilling of professionals. As part of its mission, the association will launch the National Masonry Academy in Sheffield. This state-of-the-art training facility will offer apprenticeships as well as registered installer programmes, ensuring that workers at every level of the supply chain are equipped with the skills needed to thrive.
“We recognise that in order for the government’s ambitious building agenda to succeed, a skilled and motivated workforce is essential,” comments Eve Livett, CEO of MAGB. “This is where the Masonry Association of Great Britain comes in. We’ll be working closely with the government to ensure that the sector is adequately supported, particularly when it comes to apprenticeships, social responsibility and quality upskilling.”
MAGB’s inclusive approach is what sets it apart. While many industry bodies focus on a specific subset of the sector, MAGB’s broad membership encompasses the full range of masonry businesses, including those working in stone, brick, block, GRC and more. This inclusive membership ensures that MAGB not only represents the varied needs of the masonry sector but also provides cutting-edge training opportunities that reflect the diversity of the industry.
“We are committed to supporting our members by creating opportunities for them to collaborate, share knowledge, and access the latest materials and technology,” adds Livett. “Our members will not only have access to first-class training, but they will also play an integral role in shaping the curriculum, ensuring that it remains relevant and responsive to the needs of today’s workforce.”
MAGB’s commitment to workforce development extends beyond the National Masonry Academy. The association will establish five strategically placed training hubs across the UK, ensuring that members have access to high-quality training no matter where they are located. These hubs will focus on providing targeted education and skills development to support both small and large businesses in the masonry sector.
With its inclusive approach and strong focus on skills development, the Masonry Association of Great Britain is poised to play a pivotal role in building a highly skilled workforce to support the UK’s broader construction ambitions. As the association expands its reach and influence, it is actively welcoming new members who share the same vision and ethos. Businesses and individuals eager to be part of a progressive and inclusive community are encouraged to join and help shape the future of construction.
