A new survey from electrical retailer, AO.com, has revealed which is the best biscuit to offer construction workers at break time.
While the top ten list includes lots of familiar faces, there are some entrants that many would consider a “boring” choice, including the plain digestive, rich tea biscuit and ginger nut, all of which pipped more exciting options, such as a wagon wheel and jammy dodger to the top ten breakdown.
According to the new report, construction worker’s favourite biscuits to have on the job are, ranked:
1 Cookie
A beloved treat from across the pond, this is traditionally served alongside a glass of milk, but Brits love it with a brew.
2 Chocolate digestive
A British classic, consisting of a crunchy, sweet biscuit topped with a layer of milk or dark chocolate – known for causing controversy around which way is the right way up!
3 Rich Tea
Simple and subtle are two words that come to mine when thinking of a Rich Tea, but this simplicity hasn’t deterred Brits from including them in their top ten. It’s a versatile, no frills sweet treat that has firmly established itself in British tea culture for generations.
4 Chocolate Hobnob
The digestive’s oaty cousin the hobnob perfectly balances sweet and nutty flavours.
5 Plain Hobnob
Hobnobs are known for its crunchy, mildly sweet and nutty flavour and satisfying bite, making it an ideal accompaniment to a tea of coffee
UK classics including the Bourbon, Jammie Dodger and Wagon Wheel didn’t even make it into the top ten.
When it comes to other popular biscuits, the votes were split (best biscuits ranked below by percentage of votes):
1 Cookie: 14.81%
2 Chocolate digestive: 13.58%
3 Rich tea biscuit: 9.88%
4 Chocolate Hobnob: 8.64%
5 Hobnob: 7.41%
6 Ginger nut: 6.17%
7 Custard cream: 6.17%
8 Shortbread: 4.94%
9 Plain digestive: 4.94%
10 Lotus biscuit: 4.94%
11 Bourbon: 3.70%
12 Biscotti: 2.47%
13 Jammie dodger: 2.47%
14 Malted milk biscuit: 1.23%
15 Wagon wheel: 0.00%
Jay Lockton, baking and cooking expert from AO.com, comments on the findings, saying: “Britain has a long standing love affair with tea, making the Best Biscuit debate a controversial one in UK households, which is why we set out to uncover the nation’s best biscuit.
“It came as no real surprise that the classic chocolate digestive was rated the best to enjoy with a hot drink, with other biscuit barrel classics including the ginger nut, custard cream and rich tea all making it into the top ten.
“It goes to show that Brits love the nostalgia of foods that have stood the test of time – despite their simplicity.”
