Roger Bisby: Putting His Foot Down with Solid Gear

Roger Bisby: Putting His Foot Down with Solid Gear

This is the third pair of work shoes/boots I have tested this month. You know how it is – you wait ages for a pair to come along and then three turn up at once.

Solid Gear aren’t the cheapest shoes out there but, if you love your feet, they are well worth the money. You just step into a different world of comfort.

Pick up these Griffin shoes and put them on and you will also feel the difference. They just don’t feel like work shoes. They are lightweight, airy, flexible and with a very high tech 3D breathable lining they let out the sweat.

Add to that a Cordura rip stop fabric with leather overlaid and you have a very comfortable shoe. If you are looking for a safety shoe that feels and looks more like a trainer you have arrived.

My favourite test for modern work shoes is when the site agent tells you to go and put on some safety boots or shoes. Fooled you!

The toecaps are multi-layer fibreglass and they pass the EU smash test. You get the required protection on the underside as well but it is made up of a composite plate, which is bendy but keeps the nails from spoiling your day.

If you take the insole out you will see the high tec American Poron impact pad in the heel. This was invented because you will notice that a lot of people in America weigh a lot and, incredibly, they still manage to work for a living, so they need that Poron disc to prevent seismic reactions on the San Andreas fault line.

The outsoles are non-slip anti-static Vibram TPU oil and slip-resistant, which is the stuff mountain climbers have so it is good in snow and ice. Oh yes, I should mention they are a wide fit, so no good for ballet dancers.

Griffin is a high-tech safety boot that offers a combination of durability, lightweight and comfort. This boot comes with the new oil and slip-resistant Vibram TPU outsole, which offers outstanding grip on ice and snow, even in very low temperatures.

In addition, premium full-grain impregnated leather combines with Cordura ripstop fabric to ensure great water repellency and breathability.
