The trades music tastes – revealed!

The best and worst of UK builders’ music tastes have been revealed in a new campaign that analyses the Spotify playlists curated and listened to by those working in 14 popular trades.

Tool insurance experts at Toolbox by Admiral have scraped UK Spotify data to find the music that most often features in builders’ playlists to reveal which songs, artists, and genres they listen to while working.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers (RHCP) seem to have stolen the hearts of builders in the UK with their infectious blend of rock, funk, punk, and a dash of psychedelic seasoning, as Toolbox found that two popular RHCP songs made it to builders’ top 10 songs – 1999’s Californication and Snow (Hey Oh), released in 2006.

When the Sun Goes Down by Arctic Monkeys, Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac, and Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers are builders’ top three songs on Spotify.

Here are builders’ top 10 songs, according to UK Spotify data:

  1. When the Sun Goes Down – Arctic Monkeys
  2. Go Your Own Way – Fleetwood Mac
  3. Californication – Red Hot Chili Peppers
  4. Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana
  5. Everybody Wants To Rule The World – Tears For Fears
  6. Wake Me Up – Avicii
  7. The Drugs Don’t Work – The Verve
  8. Snow (Hey Oh) – Red Hot Chili Peppers
  9. Naïve – The Kooks
  10. Feel Good Inc. – Gorillaz

A spokesperson for Toolbox by Admiral commented: “There’s a whole symphony of reasons tradespeople and other workers enjoy listening to tunes while they’re on the clock. Research shows that the limbic system, which is involved in processing emotions and memory, lights up when our ears perceive music. This makes music a fantastic stress-buster, but in the most basic sense, it can also help muffle out annoying background noise, allowing you to focus on the task at hand.

“However, it’s worth noting that although there are countless benefits of listening to music at work, it can come with health and safety concerns, so make sure to listen at sensible volumes, be mindful of tripping hazards, keep electrics away from water, and consider music licensing laws when listening to music at work.

“Despite everyone’s best intentions, sometimes accidents can happen. Fortunately, if you’re a tradie or own a trade-related business, our flexible public liability insurance and employers’ liability insurance policies can protect you, your employees and your business from costly legal repercussions.”
