Geoff Harry who works at RGB Building Supplies’ Porthleven branch and RGB customer Steve Dyer recently swapped their hard hats for helmets and cycled from John O’Groats to Land’s End raising £4,684 for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).
The 1,000-mile journey took the pair 12 days to complete and saw them ride through Scotland, Wales and England. Geoff and Steve, who works for Helston based monumental masons J H Ching, rode unassisted and carried everything they needed. In addition to raising funds for CHSW, Geoff and Steve took on the challenge to celebrate their 60th and 50th birthdays respectively. However, they knew what to expect as the duo also completed the epic journey 10 years earlier to mark turning 50 and 40!
Geoff commented: “It was an extremely tough challenge, but we’d been training hard all winter. We’re both very proud to have completed the ride and to have done something amazing to raise money for a fantastic charity.”
Steve added: “We’d like to thank all our family and friends, and the RGB staff and customers who have supported us and helped us to smash our £3,000 target.”
Children’s Hospice South West is RGB Building Supplies’ chosen charity. It has hospices in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset and provides care for children with life-limiting conditions and their families across the South West.
Bernadette Chambers, Corporate Partnerships Fundraiser at Children’s Hospice South West, said: “On behalf of all of the children and families that we support at Children’s Hospice South West, I would like to thank Geoff and Steve for taking on the John O’Groats to Lands End cycle ride. There are many ways they could have marked their birthdays, but we’re touched they chose to complete this challenge while raising vital funds for CHSW at the same time. Thank you to everyone who supported them with their training and fundraising – we simply couldn’t offer the care and support we do without your generosity.”
Kevin Fenlon, CEO at RGB Building Supplies, added: “A huge well done to Geoff and Steve from everyone at RGB Building Supplies; they should be extremely proud of themselves for raising such a fantastic amount of money. It’s an amazing accomplishment to have completed the journey, especially as they didn’t have a support team assisting them.”
