As summer gets into full swing, homeowners are looking to make the most of their outdoor spaces. Outdoor living is a key trend for 2022 and is all about creating a flow from the inside, out. To achieve this, landscapers can bring indoor comforts outside, and treat the garden as if it were an extension of the home.

With careful planning, smaller garden spaces can be maximised to provide practical living spaces that can be utilised year round. The average garden size in the UK is just 14m²; which means maximising tiny spaces using borders, pathways and strong landscaping lines is crucial to creating not only a stunning, but also a practical outdoor living space.

A family of five from York, transformed their tiny, urban back garden into a stunning and practical living area using low maintenance composite decking and artificial grass.

Prior to its revamp, the family’s garden featured a curved side wall, a patch of uneven grass and drab, concrete paving slabs. Planting attractive flowers and rendering the curved wall, has left the family with a beautiful outdoor area, which can now be used to entertain friends and family year-round.

A modern dining table set has been placed at the far side of the garden under a tree, which acts as a natural canopy against the sunlight. Lighting and soft furnishings, including an outdoor sofa, have been installed above the composite decking, which is eco-friendly, with each square metre containing the equivalent of more than 3,000 plastic bottle caps or 280 plastic bottles.

Composite decking often comes as a full system, complete with clips for easy installation for landscapers; it is the perfect material to create a garden which looks great but is easy to maintain.

Making sustainable choices when it comes to developing and designing gardens is crucial to combat the growing crisis around waste products, as a result environmentally-friendly garden design is growing in popularity.

Research has shown that people have become more eco-friendly in the last six months and are more likely to make sustainable choices when purchasing products to revamp their garden and home. Composite products are made by combining FSC 100 per cent hardwood flour, a waste product of hardwood production, and recycled plastic.

Zoning in the garden is also another effective way to add separate spaces for dining and relaxing. Split levels in a sloping garden also create the illusion of more space. The chosen material is essential for creating a personal design that remains in harmony with the rest of the furnishings and the interior of the home.

Different levels help to zone areas and present a wonderful opportunity to play around with materials. Steps leading to terraces create focal points and a sense of journey and discovery. Planting also lends itself to split levels. Having built-in beds at different heights ensures that planting can be designed to fill every line of vision.

Due to escalating land prices the best solution to effectively create the illusion of space, with minimal cost, is by looking at more innovative ways to expand an area. Aspects of the home such as balconies, roof terraces and raised decks serve to create that extra room without an increased spend on a larger plot size.

Inspired by the ‘new normal’ of remote-working, graphic designer Steven Haygarth also transformed the top of his south-facing garden, into a home-working haven, He used eco-friendly decking and cladding products to create a garden room which provides extra space for Steven and his family and includes a corner sofa, shelving units and a small bathroom.

The building sits aloft a luxury outdoor seating area which was also created using sustainable composite material and features LED lighting which illuminates the whole garden and creates a cosy and relaxing ambience.

The overall look and feel of a garden design starts with its foundations and the chosen materials are essential for creating a personal design that remains in harmony with the rest of the furnishings chosen to create a unique space.

In order to maximise garden space, it’s important that an outside area is easy to maintain while also being liveable. Most homeowners want to create a garden which is practical, coupled with a range of different solutions to make outdoor living a reality all year round.
