Introduction to Part L and solar roofing

The countdown to Part L has well and truly begun. There’s never been a better time to assess what the changes will mean for your business, including not only what to watch out for but also how to maximise your opportunities for long-term gain, so says Sam Tebbs, Training Manager at Marley.

Sam said: ‘Successful outcomes are usually borne out of thorough preparation, and the roofing industry is no different. Whilst Part L will inevitably demand changes to working practises, roofing contractors that have taken the trouble to research, prepare and adapt their businesses to embrace the changes, will find themselves ahead of the game.

What Part L means for you

‘The Part L Building Regulation, implemented on June 15th, covers the ‘Conservation of Fuel and Power’ regarding both new construction projects and some refurbishment work, for dwellings and other buildings in England. Put simply, it means that developers will be required to ensure that the buildings they produce meet the Government’s stringent energy targets – that new homes produce 31 per cent less carbon emissions than at present. As such, they will be demanding both the high-quality products, such as solar photovoltaics (PV) systems, as well as the skilled workforce required to fit them, to enable these ambitious targets to be met. Crucially, with the demand for solar energy likely to drastically increase, roofing contractors who acquire the relevant product knowledge and installation skills now, will secure a real competitive advantage for themselves.’

Train to gain

Taking the lead, Marley has developed a free and comprehensive series of specially-tailored webinars to provide roofing contractors with invaluable information not only on Part L but also the very real benefits of solar energy, focussing on Marley SolarTile, as well as the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) which covers installations of solar PV systems.

Sam said, ‘The brand new ‘Introduction to Part L and solar roofing’ webinars aim to walk roofing contractors through six essential aspects of the new developments:

  • Understanding Part L
  • How Part L affects YOUR business
  • The future is solar roofing
  • How solar (PV) works
  • What MCS accreditation means for YOU
  • Installing Marley SolarTile

There are currently three dates planned for the webinar:

  • Wednesday 23rd March
  • Wednesday 27th April
  • Wednesday 25th May

with more planned in the coming months. Available to anyone within the construction and roofing industry, for further details and to book your space, visit: www.marley.co.uk/partL

Marley SolarTile – the future is here

Marley’s integrated SolarTile is compatible with all clay and concrete tiles and slates, so solar PV can easily be incorporated into any roof design. Supplied as a complete kit, all components, such as adhesive flashing and fireproofing materials are included and, featuring double fixing to battens and trusses, there’s no need for counter battens so there’s no extra material costs.

Coming in colour-coded boxes for ease of installation, the patented push- together design means that installation times of less than one hour per kilowatt peak can be achieved.

Sam said: ‘In addition, for roofing contractors purchasing the full Marley SolarTile system, Marley is offering invaluable on-site installation training (for the first installation) to ensure customers maximise the opportunity presented by solar energy. Upon purchase, simply contact us to organise a date for one of our team to assist with your first on-site installation.’
